TOKYO, June 1 (Xinhua) -- Capital spending by Japanese companies in the January-March period edged up 0.047 percent from a year earlier, government data showed Monday.

Investment by all nonfinancial sectors for purposes such as building plants and purchasing equipment totaled 18.81 trillion yen (about 118 billion U.S. dollars), with the gain slowing down from the previous quarter's 6.5 percent expansion, the Ministry of Finance data showed.

In the first quarter of 2026, pretax profits increased 14.6 percent to 32.63 trillion yen, up for the sixth straight quarter, while sales rose 1.1 percent to 408.66 trillion yen, the ministry said.

The latest figures will be used to revise Japan's gross domestic product data for the January-March quarter, which showed a faster-than-expected annualized real growth of 2.1 percent.

The Cabinet Office will release the revised GDP data on June 8.
