TEHRAN, May 29 (Xinhua) -- Iran's Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi said on Friday reaching a final peace agreement hinges on the cessation of the U.S. "maximalist approach and volatile and contradictory positions."

According to an Iranian Foreign Ministry statement, Araghchi said during a phone call with his Omani counterpart, Sayyid Badr bin Hamad bin Hamood Albusaidi, that Iran remains firm in defending its "inalienable rights and legitimate interests."

He condemned the U.S. rhetoric of threat against Oman, saying the "responsible" measures of Iran and Oman for the traffic management through the Strait of Hormuz are based on international law and suit the international community's interests.

The phone call came two days after U.S. President Donald Trump, at a cabinet meeting attended by media, said no single country would have control over the Strait of Hormuz.

"It's international waters and Oman will behave just like everybody else or we'll have to blow them up. They understand that, they'll be fine," Trump said.

Separately, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, in a post on social media on Thursday, warned of "aggressively" imposing sanctions on Oman if it helps Iran establish a tolling system in the Strait of Hormuz.

Iran tightened its grip on the Strait of Hormuz beginning Feb. 28, when it barred safe passage of vessels belonging to or affiliated with Israel and the United States following joint strikes on Iranian territory.
