JAKARTA, May 29 (Xinhua) -- Disaster recovery efforts in Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra have transitioned from emergency response to a long-term rehabilitation and reconstruction phase following severe floods and landslides in late 2025, a government task force has said.
Muhammad Tito Karnavian, chairman of the Sumatra post-disaster rehabilitation and reconstruction acceleration task force, said on Thursday that cross-sector coordination has intensified since the task force's inception on Jan. 8. The group is mandated to oversee the transition toward long-term recovery.
The 2026-2028 master plan covers more than 11,000 cross-sector programs. These include the construction of river infrastructure, roads, bridges, schools and permanent housing, according to Karnavian.
Karnavian noted that the first year of implementation will focus on restoring essential infrastructure and accelerating the delivery of permanent housing to reduce the time displaced residents spend in temporary shelters.
The recovery phase will be implemented gradually under the reconstruction plan covering affected regions, he added. ■
