KUALA LUMPUR, May 28 (Xinhua) -- Malaysia's largest bank, Malayan Banking Bhd (Maybank), reported lower net profit for the first quarter of 2026, amid weaker trading income and a challenging market environment.

The bank's net profit fell 4.18 percent year-on-year to 2.48 billion ringgit (620 million U.S. dollars), it said in a statement on Thursday.

The bank's revenue also dropped 11.61 percent year on year to 14.92 billion ringgit during the quarter.

Maybank said stronger net interest margins, disciplined cost control, improved asset quality management and higher core fee income helped cushion earnings, but were offset by lower trading income amid volatile market conditions.

Maybank President and Group Chief Executive Officer Khairussaleh Ramli said the group continues to deepen regional connectivity across ASEAN while maintaining prudent risk management amid ongoing macroeconomic and geopolitical uncertainties.
