ZAGREB, May 27 (Xinhua) -- Croatia has broken multiple temperature records for May during an unseasonably long heatwave, the national meteorological service (DHMZ) reported.
While late-May heat is common along the Adriatic coast, meteorologists note that the duration of this multi-day warm spell is highly unusual.
Several coastal areas logged historic highs over the past week.
Dubrovnik broke daily records on May 22, 23, and 26, while Rijeka hit a record 31.4 degrees Celsius on May 24, marking one of its earliest such highs since official records began in 1948.
The peak of the heatwave occurred on Tuesday, when Omisalj Airport reached an all-time May record of 32.1 degrees Celsius, and the island of Rab hit 33.0 degrees Celsius in the shade.
The weather is forecast to remain hot on Wednesday. The DHMZ has issued severe weather warnings for continental Croatia, alerting the public to potential heavy downpours, thunderstorms, gale-force winds, and hail. ■
