KAMPALA, May 27 (Xinhua) -- Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni has proposed appointments to a new Cabinet for the 2026-2031 term, retaining both the vice president and prime minister while making changes across key ministerial portfolios.

According to a statement issued by State House on Tuesday night, Museveni retained Jessica Alupo as vice president and Robinah Nabbanja as prime minister.

Among the key changes, Museveni appointed Adonia Ayebare, Uganda's permanent representative to the United Nations, as minister of foreign affairs, replacing Jeje Odongo, who was dropped from the Cabinet.

Ephraim Kamuntu was appointed minister of internal affairs, replacing Kahinda Otafiire, who was reassigned as minister of water and environment.

Kiryowa Kiwanuka, the former attorney general, was named minister of defense and veteran affairs, succeeding Jacob Oboth-Oboth, who was elected speaker of parliament.

The president also appointed new ministers to several other portfolios while dropping some members from the Cabinet.

The new Cabinet comprises 30 ministers, excluding the vice president and the prime minister, 51 ministers of state (including one deputy attorney general), and four senior presidential advisors.

The appointments are subject to parliamentary approval, in accordance with Uganda's constitutional requirements.

The Cabinet announcement came after Museveni was sworn in for another term on May 12 following his victory in the January presidential election.
