VIENTIANE, May 21 (Xinhua) -- The Lao National Unexploded Ordnance Program (UXO Lao) destroyed three MK 82 GPLD aerial bombs, each weighing 500 pounds (227 kg), during a recent operation in southern Laos' Attapeu province.
The bombs were discovered in a cassava plantation owned by a local resident. After the discovery, UXO Lao teams conducted surveys to identify the ordnance and prepare a safe disposal plan while coordinating with local authorities and informing nearby residents about the operation, Lao News Agency reported on Thursday.
Following safety assessments, the bombs were moved about 1,500 meters away from the community to a secure demolition site, where they were destroyed using low-order demolition techniques in line with technical safety standards.
Authorities said the operation aimed to ensure public safety and reduce the risks posed by unexploded ordnance. ■
