LONDON, May 19 (Xinhua) -- Andy Burnham, mayor of Greater Manchester, has been selected as Labour's candidate for the by-election in the Makerfield constituency in northwest England, Sky News reported on Tuesday.
Burnham served as a member of the House of Commons from 2001 to 2017 before becoming mayor of Greater Manchester. He had previously sought to return to parliament through a by-election, but his application was not approved by Labour's National Executive Committee.
If elected, Burnham would regain a seat in the House of Commons, giving him the initial eligibility to run for the Labour leadership. ■
