RAMALLAH, May 16 (Xinhua) -- A Palestinian man was killed by Israeli forces in a refugee camp in the northern West Bank on Saturday, the Ramallah-based Palestinian Ministry of Health said.

In a brief statement, the ministry said that Nour al-Din Fayyad, 34, died from a gunshot wound to the thigh sustained during an Israeli raid on the Jenin refugee camp.

The Palestinian Red Crescent Society said its medical teams treated a young man at the entrance to the camp, suffering from respiratory and cardiac arrest, after being shot in the thigh by Israeli soldiers.

Local sources and eyewitnesses reported that Fayyad attempted to enter the camp, home to more than 57,000 people, before Israeli soldiers opened fire and killed him.

There has been no official Israeli comment on the incident.

With Fayyad's death, the number of Palestinians killed since the start of the ongoing Israeli military operation in Jenin and its refugee camp in January 2025 has risen to 65, according to Palestinian statistics.

Cities, towns, and villages in the West Bank have witnessed a continuous escalation of violence, including killings, arrests, house and property demolitions, and settler attacks, since the start of the Israeli war on the Gaza Strip on October 7, 2023.

According to the Palestinian Liberation Organization's Commission against the Wall and Settlements, Israeli forces and settlers carried out more than 1,600 attacks during April targeting Palestinians, their lands, and their property.

A 2025 UN report said that more than 700,000 Israeli settlers and 3.3 million Palestinians live in the West Bank, including East Jerusalem.
