KABUL, May 17 (Xinhua) -- Security personnel have discovered illegal drugs and firearms and took into custody three drug smugglers in Badakhshan province, north of Afghanistan, an army spokesman in the province said Sunday.
The alleged drug traffickers, according to the official, were attempting to smuggle a quantity of opium poppy out of the country, but the army personnel, based on an intelligence report, launched operations and arrested the smugglers from Khwahan district the other day.
In a similar drive against illegal drugs, security personnel earlier discovered and destroyed a drug lab in Sangin district of the southern Helmand province a couple of days ago. ■
