MOSCOW, May 17 (Xinhua) -- Russian air defense systems shot down 556 Ukrainian fixed-wing drones overnight, the Russian Defense Ministry said Sunday.
According to the ministry, the drones were intercepted between 10:00 p.m. Moscow time (1900 GMT) on Saturday and 7:00 a.m. (0400 GMT) on Sunday over a dozen Russian regions, as well as over the waters of the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov.
Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin said earlier Sunday that more than 120 drones had been downed over the past 24 hours. The attack was the largest one on the Russian capital in over a year, according to TASS news agency.
He said 12 people were preliminarily reported injured, most of them construction workers, near the entrance checkpoint of the Moscow Oil Refinery, while the plant's operations were not disrupted. ■
