ADEN, Yemen, May 16 (Xinhua) -- A collision between a passenger bus and a cargo truck left six people dead and 19 others injured in Yemen's southeastern province of Hadramout, local authorities said Saturday.
The collision took place late on Friday on the Al Abr international highway, a key transit route linking Yemen with neighboring Saudi Arabia, read a statement issued by the government-aligned Emergency Forces.
Preliminary information indicated that the bus driver lost control of the vehicle while attempting to avoid camels crossing the road, causing the bus to veer into the opposite lane and crash head-on into a medium-sized truck, it said.
Medical teams were dispatched to the scene shortly after the collision and provided emergency assistance to the injured at Al Abr public hospital, who were later transferred for further treatment, it said.
Yemeni Transport Minister Mohsen Al-Amri said an investigation committee has been formed to determine the circumstances surrounding the collision and undertake necessary legal procedures.
Deadly road accidents remain frequent in war-ravaged Yemen, where damaged infrastructure, poorly-maintained highways and weak traffic safety systems continue to endanger travelers.
Yemen's crisis began in late 2014 when the Houthis group seized the capital Sanaa and large swathes of the north, prompting a Saudi-led coalition to intervene in 2015 in support of the Yemeni government. The conflict has since spiraled into what the UN describes as the world's worst humanitarian crisis. ■
