TOKYO, May 12 (Xinhua) -- Japan's household spending fell 2.9 percent in inflation-adjusted real terms year-on-year in March, marking the fourth consecutive monthly decline, government data showed Tuesday.

Households of two or more members spent an average of 334,701 yen (around 2,124 U.S. dollars) during the month, the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications said.

For fiscal 2025 as a whole, household spending edged up 0.1 percent in real terms from a year earlier, increasing for the first time in three years.

The upturn was driven by a rebound in automobile purchases, increased buying of personal computers, and a boost in consumer activity tied to the World Expo held in Osaka from April to October 2025.

Household spending is a key indicator of private consumption, which accounts for more than half of Japan's gross domestic product.
