MACAO, May 12 (Xinhua) -- The 11th International Wushu Federation (IWUF) Sanda World Cup held its opening ceremony on Tuesday in China's Macao Special Administrative Region.
Hosted by the IWUF and organized by the Wushu General Association of Macao, the tournament will take place from Wednesday to Friday at the Tap Seac Multisport Pavilion in Macao.
According to organizers, the event is expected to draw nearly 60 athletes from 21 countries and regions to compete for a total of 17 gold medals. It features 17 weight categories, including 11 men's divisions and six women's divisions.
Team China has sent eight players to the tournament. Team Macao has four players and Team Hong Kong has two players in the competition.
Zhang Yuping, IWUF secretary general, said earlier that the Sanda World Cup is one of the organization's six official flagship events, and gathers the top three athletes from all weight divisions of the World Wushu Championships. ■
