BEIJING, May 12 (Xinhua) -- Chinese stocks closed lower on Tuesday, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index down 0.25 percent to 4,214.49 points.
The Shenzhen Component Index closed 0.47 percent lower at 15,824.92 points.
The combined turnover of these two indices totaled 3.24 trillion yuan (about 473.5 billion U.S. dollars), shrinking from 3.5 trillion yuan on the previous trading day.
The optical communication, electric power and power grid sectors led the gains, while the pork, innovative pharmaceuticals and dairy industries posted the biggest declines.
The ChiNext Index, tracking China's Nasdaq-style board of growth enterprises, gained 0.15 percent to close at 3,934.88 points on Tuesday.
The STAR Composite Index, which reflects the performance of stocks on China's sci-tech innovation board, closed 0.08 percent higher on Tuesday at 2,108.63 points. ■
