AMMAN, May 10 (Xinhua) -- Jordanian Prime Minister Jafar Hassan on Sunday witnessed the signing of a 1-billion-U.S.-dollar agreement to launch the kingdom's first green ammonia production project, according to a Prime Ministry statement.

The agreement, signed between the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources and the Jordan Green Ammonia Company, a Polish-Emirati joint venture, marks Jordan's first major investment in the green hydrogen and ammonia sector.

Energy Minister Saleh Kharabsheh said the project aims to produce 100,000 tonnes of green ammonia annually, using a solar-powered, off-grid system independent of the national grid.

The project will generate up to 550 megawatts of renewable energy supported by advanced storage systems, he said.

It is projected to reduce carbon emissions by more than 200,000 tonnes per year, supporting Jordan's national strategy for environmental sustainability.

The project is expected to reach financial close by September 2027 and begin commercial operations in November 2030.
