AMMAN, May 4 (Xinhua) -- Syria's interim authorities said Monday that joint restoration work has repaired key sections of the Arab Gas Pipeline, adding that gas flows through Jordan have "significantly stabilized" the country's national grid.
Mohammed al-Bashir, head of Syria's energy authority, said several interconnection lines between Syria and Lebanon are now ready for activation.
The announcement came during a trilateral ministerial meeting in Amman, where Jordan, Syria and Lebanon said they have reached an "advanced stage" in plans to expand natural gas and electricity cooperation.
Jordanian Energy Minister Saleh Al-Kharabsheh said technical teams have completed assessments to upgrade regional energy networks. Under the current arrangement, natural gas is imported from international markets, regasified in Jordan, and then piped into Syria.
He added that efforts are now focused on finalizing similar contractual and technical arrangements with Lebanon, noting that completing repairs to gas infrastructure is a prerequisite for full electricity interconnection.
Lebanese Energy Minister Joe Saddi described the trilateral cooperation as a "strategic choice" aimed at rebuilding Lebanon's energy sector on a more sustainable and cost-effective basis. Lebanon has long faced chronic power outages and a deteriorating energy infrastructure.
The three ministers concluded the meeting by reaffirming their commitment to continued technical coordination, describing the initiative as a foundation for broader regional energy integration. ■
