BISHKEK, May 3 (Xinhua) -- Around 3,000 runners from 23 countries and regions took part in the annual Run the Silk Road international marathon on Saturday in Cholpon-Ata, Kyrgyzstan.
Held along the shores of Issyk-Kul Lake at an altitude of 1,633 meters, the Shanghai Cooperation Organization event is staged at one of the world's deepest lakes, often referred to as the "pearl of Kyrgyzstan."
Participants ranged from elite athletes to recreational runners, with events open to different age groups and abilities. Families ran alongside children, while visually impaired runners completed the course with the assistance of guides.
The marathon also serves as a qualifying event for major international races, chief referee Andrey Nasetkin said, adding that it helps promote sport and exchanges among participating countries and regions.
China's Wang Linying, competing in her first marathon abroad, won the women's full marathon.
"The altitude here is higher than where I usually train, and the warmer weather made it more challenging physically. But it's a valuable experience for future competitions," she said.
"I'm very happy to share the joy of this sport with people from different countries," she added.
Russia's Darya Belousova said the event highlighted sport's unifying role.
"Sport goes beyond politics and nationality, and it truly brings people together. I'm very happy to be here in Kyrgyzstan. The nature is beautiful, the people are warm, and the atmosphere is very welcoming. We came across this event by chance, but we're really glad we did," she said.
Local participant Mahabat Kochetkova added that the enthusiasm of the runners stood out.
"Early in the morning, they were already outside warming up and getting ready, very focused and disciplined. It's great to see children involved as well. And of course, Issyk-Kul itself is the most unforgettable part for me," she said. ■
