JERUSALEM, May 1 (Xinhua) -- The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said Friday it struck and destroyed more than 40 Hezbollah infrastructure sites across southern Lebanon over the past day.
The targets included command centers and military facilities used by Hezbollah militants to launch attacks on Israeli troops and civilians, the IDF said in a statement. The military added it would continue operating against threats to Israeli civilians and soldiers.
Also on Friday, Lebanon's Ministry of Public Health said at least five people were killed and 13 wounded in Israeli airstrikes on multiple areas across southern Lebanon between Thursday night and Friday morning.
Two people were killed and 10 others injured in a strike on the town of Nabatieh al-Fawqa, while another strike on the village of Harouf in the Nabatieh district killed one and wounded three, including a child, the ministry said.
The deputy mayor of Jannata, Ahmad al-Husseini, was killed in a strike targeting the area between the town of Maaroub and the Al-Hamairi municipality in the Tyre district, it said. Lebanese soldier Ali Refaat Jaber was killed in another strike on the town of Kfar Remmen in the Nabatieh district.
In a separate development, Hezbollah said it targeted a gathering of Israeli soldiers in the village of Taybeh with a swarm of attack drones and struck Israeli military vehicles and troops in the village of Mays al-Jabal.
The violence occurred despite a ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon that took effect at midnight between April 16 and 17, following weeks of intensified cross-border fighting linked to the U.S.-Israeli war with Iran. Last week, U.S. President Donald Trump announced a three-week extension of the ceasefire. Enditem
