HANOI, April 29 (Xinhua) -- Vietnam's southern hub, Ho Chi Minh City, on Wednesday began construction on the Ben Thanh-Thu Thiem section, an extension of its Metro Line 2, the Vietnam News Agency reported.

With a total investment of nearly 46.3 trillion Vietnamese dong (about 1.84 billion U.S. dollars), the 6.2-km line runs through six stations.

Alongside the Ben Thanh-Tham Luong section, another part of Metro Line 2 that broke ground in mid-January, the project is targeted for completion in 2030, enhancing access to Tan Son Nhat International Airport and Long Thanh International Airport.

The city eyes expansion of its urban rail network to 187 km by 2030, with Metro Line 1, the 19.7-km Ben Thanh-Suoi Tien, put into operation in late 2024, the state media reported.
