MOSCOW, April 28 (Xinhua) -- Six people were killed after being trapped in a snow avalanche at a mining site in Russia's Republic of Buryatia, Russian emergency services said Tuesday.
The accident occurred at the Irokinda mine in the Muysky district, when nine workers were clearing a road, the Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations said earlier in the day. Three workers managed to escape on their own, while six were buried under the snow.
In an updated statement cited by TASS news agency, the ministry said the bodies of the victims have been found under the snow, and search operations were completed.
Russia's Investigative Committee said it has opened a criminal case over possible safety violations. ■
