RAMALLAH, April 29 (Xinhua) -- A Palestinian man was killed and two Israeli soldiers wounded during an Israeli military raid early Wednesday in the town of Silwad, east of Ramallah in the West Bank, according to Palestinian and Israeli sources.
The Palestinian Ministry of Health said in a brief statement that it had been informed by the General Authority for Civil Affairs of the death of Abdel Halim Rouhi Abdel Halim Hammad, 37, who was shot by Israeli forces during the raid on Silwad.
In a separate statement, the Israeli army said its forces carried out an operational activity in the town at dawn, adding that two Palestinians "attacked Israeli soldiers," resulting in injuries to the soldiers, who were evacuated to a hospital for medical treatment.
The army added that its forces opened fire at the assailants, killing one and "neutralizing" the other, who was subsequently arrested.
Raed Hamed, mayor of Silwad, told Xinhua that Israeli forces conduct near-daily incursions into the town, accompanied by repeated searches of residents' homes.
Since the outbreak of the Gaza conflict on Oct. 7, 2023, more than 1,080 Palestinians, including over 235 children, have been killed in the West Bank, according to data from the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs. ■
