ACCRA, April 27 (Xinhua) -- An attack on a military convoy protecting civilians resulted in the death of three civilians and seven assailants in northern Ghana on Monday, the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) said.

In a statement, the GAF said that the military convoy escorting 140 civilians traveling from the Bawku area in the Upper East Region toward Bolgatanga, the regional capital, came under heavy attack from unknown assailants.

The convoy "was shot at several times resulting in the death of 3 of the civilians being escorted and injuring one," the GAF said.

According to the release, the military successfully repulsed the attack, neutralizing seven of the assailants in the process.

The statement said the military had also retrieved a G3 automatic rifle from one of the assailants, who had escaped into a mosque, in addition to two loaded magazines with 20 rounds of ammunition each and 176 rounds of additional ammunition.

"Ten other suspects were arrested and are assisting with investigations," the statement added.
