BAGHDAD, April 27 (Xinhua) -- Iraqi President Nizar Amedi officially named Ali al-Zaidi as the prime minister-designate Monday night, tasking him with forming a new government within 30 days.

According to the official Iraqi News Agency (INA), Amedi assigned the mandate to al-Zaidi after he was nominated by the Coordination Framework (CF), the largest parliamentary bloc and an umbrella alliance of Shiite parties.

"In accordance with our constitutional responsibilities, we have tasked the candidate of the largest parliamentary bloc, Ali al-Zaidi, with forming the new government," Amedi said on his page on X platform.

Ali al-Zaidi is a prominent figure with a career spanning the financial, academic, and media sectors. He currently serves as the Chairman of the Board of the National Holding Company.

In January, the CF nominated former Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki for the post. U.S. President Donald Trump criticized the move, warning Washington would "no longer help Iraq." Al-Maliki called the remarks blatant interference and a violation of Iraqi sovereignty.

Under Iraq's post-2003 power-sharing system, the presidency is held by a Kurd, the parliamentary speaker by a Sunni Muslim, and the prime minister by a Shiite Muslim.
