KIEV, April 25 (Xinhua) -- The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) plans to raise about 500 million euros (586 million U.S. dollars) to repair the confinement structure at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, the Interfax-Ukraine news agency reported Friday.

At a briefing ahead of the 40th anniversary of the Chernobyl disaster, Odile Renaud-Basso, the bank's president, said the funds must be raised by the end of 2027 to repair the New Safe Confinement.

The confinement was put into operation in July 2019 to contain the destroyed reactor from the Chernobyl accident and was severely damaged in a Russian drone attack in 2025.

"The real work on the full renovation must begin in 2028 with the goal of completion in 2030," she said, warning that without repairs, corrosion could fundamentally weaken the confinement structure.
