DAR ES SALAAM, April 24 (Xinhua) -- A Chinese expert team on Friday concluded a comprehensive epidemiological survey on Pemba Island in Tanzania's Zanzibar, producing the island's first-ever schistosomiasis distribution map.
The survey, conducted under the second phase of a China-aided technical assistance project for schistosomiasis control, covered 129 communities and filled a critical data gap in local disease control efforts.
Over the past two months, the team visited villages and households, working with Zanzibar health authorities to conduct large-scale screenings. Their work produced a comprehensive database covering the entire island.
The distribution map highlights regional differences in infection levels, laying the foundation for identifying high-risk areas and implementing targeted interventions.
Shaali Ame, an official with Zanzibar's Ministry of Health, hailed the survey as a milestone that strengthens local surveillance and disease control strategies.
Wang Wei, head of the Chinese expert team, said the map will guide resource allocation, adding that the next phase will focus on technical training and sustainable, localized prevention mechanisms.
Schistosomiasis, one of the five major parasitic diseases prioritized by the World Health Organization, remains a serious public health challenge in Africa, hindering socio-economic development across the continent. ■
