KABUL, April 23 (Xinhua) -- At least six people have been confirmed dead after flash floods triggered by heavy rainfall swept parts of Afghanistan, local authorities said on Thursday.

Mawlawi Baridad Saber, head of the natural disaster management authority of western Badghis province, said the floods struck areas of Bala Murghab district late Wednesday night following intense downpours.

Five people were killed in the floods in Badghis province, including three children and two women, the official said, adding that the floods had caused considerable damage to residential houses and agricultural land in the affected areas.

In Samangan province, north of Afghanistan, one person was trapped and killed in flash flooding on Thursday following heavy rains in Dara-i-Suf Payin district, according to the provincial police.

Floods have also swept part of the northern Faryab province, but no casualties have been reported.

The Meteorological Department of Afghanistan has forecasted more rain and flooding in parts of the country for Thursday.
