MOSCOW, April 23 (Xinhua) -- The Arctic holds vital strategic significance for Russia's economic development and the protection of its national sovereignty, Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Thursday.
Chairing a video conference with government members focused on the development of the Arctic zone and the Transarctic Transport Corridor, Putin noted the unique strategic importance of the Arctic region for Russia, its national economy, the expansion of Russia's industrial potential, and safeguarding national security and sovereignty.
He said the Transarctic Transport Corridor, stretching from St. Petersburg through Murmansk to Vladivostok, is emerging as one of the world's safest, most reliable and most efficient shipping lanes.
The importance of the Northern Transarctic Route is becoming "increasingly evident" against the backdrop of global supply chain disruptions caused by multiple conflicts, Putin said.
He added that Russia is strengthening its Arctic logistics network, including seaports, river ports, railways, highways and airports.
"By upholding peace and stability in this strategic region, we will ensure its long-term socio-economic development, raise living standards, preserve the unique culture of the northern indigenous people, and protect the Arctic's fragile natural ecosystem," Putin said. ■
