DAR ES SALAAM, April 23 (Xinhua) -- A Commission of Inquiry into the post-election violence of October 2025 confirmed Thursday that 518 people lost their lives during the unrest, with the majority succumbing to gunshot wounds.

The findings were presented to President Samia Suluhu Hassan at State House in Dar es Salaam by Commission Chairperson Mohamed Chande Othman.

Othman said the report was based on extensive medical and forensic investigations, including interviews with 80 doctors and specialists, postmortem examinations, and hospital records nationwide.

Of the deceased, 490 were male and 28 female, including 21 children, said Othman, adding that 16 of the total victims were members of the security forces.

The report stated that fatalities were concentrated in several regions, with Dar es Salaam recording 182 deaths, Mwanza 90, Mbeya 80, and Arusha 53.

"Forensic analysis revealed that 197 deaths were caused by gunshot wounds, while others resulted from trauma and related injuries," Othman said.

According to the report, as of March 31, a total of 2,390 people had received treatment for injuries, including 2,270 civilians and 120 security personnel.

However, Othman emphasized that the figures may not capture all cases, as some victims sought treatment outside formal health facilities or across borders.

He added that the unrest has caused profound social and economic consequences, affecting families, the productive workforce, and national stability.
