FRANKFURT, April 22 (Xinhua) -- Germany's largest airport, Frankfurt Airport, inaugurated its new Terminal 3 with a ceremony on Wednesday. It will begin operation on Thursday.
As one of the largest privately funded infrastructure projects in Europe, construction on the new terminal took more than ten years with an investment of around 4 billion euros (4.69 billion U.S. dollars).
According to the airport operator Fraport Group, the new terminal can handle about 19 million passengers per year and be expanded to accommodate up to 25 million. A total of 57 airlines previously based in Terminal 2 will be housed in the new one.
Stefan Schulte, CEO of Fraport Group, told the German newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung that the opening of Terminal 3 is expected to boost annual passenger traffic of the airport to between 65 and 66 million, about 4 percent higher than in 2025. ■
