RIGA, April 21 (Xinhua) -- The Latvian government on Tuesday approved a 40-million-euro (46.8 million U.S. dollars) program to support individuals in purchasing environmentally friendly vehicles.
The scheme, developed by the Ministry of Climate and Energy, will provide financial incentives for buying electric vehicles, plug-in hybrid cars and hydrogen-powered vehicles.
Subsidy levels will vary depending on the type of vehicle and whether applicants hold a Latvian Honorary Family Certificate, which is granted to families with more than three children.
The program will run until the allocated funding is exhausted, but no later than Dec. 31, 2029.
Climate and Energy Minister Kaspars Melnis said the initiative would help reduce Latvia's reliance on imported fossil fuels such as petrol and diesel by promoting the use of domestically produced renewable electricity. ■
