ZABLJAK, Montenegro, April 20 (Xinhua) -- Montenegrin Prime Minister Milojko Spajic on Monday praised the reconstruction of the Tara River Bridge as a "masterpiece of the engineering profession," as a ceremony marked the resumption of work following a winter pause.

Construction of the Chinese-aided project has resumed on structural repairs, upgrades to access roads, and enhancements to traffic safety systems and parking areas.

Implemented by China's Shandong Hi-speed Group, the project is expected to be completed later this year, coinciding with the 20th anniversary of Montenegro's independence and the establishment of diplomatic ties between Montenegro and China.

Spajic said the bridge holds deep historical significance and symbolizes resilience. The bridge was destroyed during World War II and was rebuilt in 1946.

He added that the reconstructed bridge will be "larger, stronger and more robust than ever before," extending its lifespan and leaving a lasting mark on the region. He also highlighted its importance for regional connectivity and tourism, describing it as a symbol of friendship between Montenegro and China.

Chen Xufeng, Chinese ambassador to Montenegro, said the project carries special significance for bilateral relations and cooperation. "It is not only a key transport link between northern and southern Montenegro, but also a symbol of deep friendship between our two peoples."

The Tara River Bridge spans 366 meters and rises 172 meters above the river. It is located within the UNESCO-listed Durmitor National Park at the junction of the municipalities of Zabljak, Mojkovac and Pljevlja.
