BEIRUT, April 17 (Xinhua) -- Heavy celebratory gunfire, including the firing of B7 rocket-propelled grenades, erupted in Beirut's southern suburbs early Friday following the start of a 10-day ceasefire between Lebanon and Israel, causing property damage and reported injuries, according to local Al Jadeed TV.
Witnesses said groups of residents took to the streets in Dahieh on motorcycles waving flags, while bursts of gunfire echoed across several neighborhoods. Stray bullets and projectiles damaged cars and private property in parts of the area and beyond.
Injuries were reported in several areas, according to news circulating on social media, prompting residents and local voices to call for restraint and an end to the use of live ammunition during celebrations.
The ceasefire, which came into effect after weeks of escalation, has been met with relief by many residents, though concerns remain over both the truce's fragility and the dangers posed by celebratory gunfire. ■
