KAMPALA, April 15 (Xinhua) -- Eight teams will compete in the 2026 CECAFA U-17 Women's Championship, organizers confirmed on Wednesday.
Yusuf Mossi, CECAFA competitions manager, told Xinhua, "We are glad to announce that eight teams have entered, including Somalia and Sudan, who will field women teams for the first time at international level."
The tournament will be hosted by Tanzania from June 13-23 in Dar es Salaam. Participating teams are Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, Djibouti, Rwanda, Burundi, Somalia, and Sudan.
"We are hopeful that, besides giving the youngsters a platform to play international matches and get exposure, the tournament will also help teams from our zone that would have qualified for the last stage of the FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup qualifiers prepare better," Mossi added.
In addition to the U-17 women's event, CECAFA will organize five other competitions this year, namely the CECAFA Kagame Cup, the CAF Women's Champions League qualifiers, the CAF African Schools Football Championship qualifiers, and the CECAFA qualifiers for the U-20 and U-17 CAF Africa Cup of Nations. ■
