KINSHASA, April 15 (Xinhua) -- At least 22 people have died after a motorized boat capsized early Monday on Lake Tanganyika in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), the Ministry of Transport said Tuesday via a statement.
According to preliminary findings, the vessel departed at around 3:00 a.m. (0100 GMT) from an unofficial port in the village of Kasama, about 18 km from Kalemie, capital of the Tanganyika province, before capsizing at approximately 4:00 a.m. (0200 GMT).
Authorities said strong winds combined with overloading likely caused the capsize. Several survivors have been rescued, while the death toll currently stands at 22, according to the statement.
The ministry said a judicial complaint has been filed, and investigations are underway to determine the cause of the accident. ■
