COLOMBO, April 13 (Xinhua) -- Legal proceedings have been initiated against hundreds of food establishments in Sri Lanka following a nationwide inspection drive linked to the festive season, officials said Monday.

A total of 817 outlets are now facing action after being found in violation of food safety regulations, according to the Public Health Inspectors' Union.

The enforcement follows a series of targeted operations carried out across the island, where authorities conducted 967 raids involving around 2,300 public health inspectors.

Alongside legal measures, officials reported the removal of unsafe food from the market. During inspections, 3,045 food items were taken into custody, while 2,299 items deemed unfit for consumption were destroyed. A total of 11,064 food-related establishments have been checked since the operation began on April 1.

K.A.P. Boralessa, president of the Public Health Inspectors' Union, said the ongoing initiative is aimed at strengthening food safety standards during a period of heightened consumption.
