BERLIN, April 13 (Xinhua) -- Hundreds of Lufthansa flights were cancelled on Monday after pilots began a two-day strike, disrupting services across Lufthansa's mainline operations and several subsidiaries.

The walkout, called by the German pilot trade union "Vereinigung Cockpit" (VC), started shortly after midnight and is due to run until late Tuesday for pilots at Lufthansa, Lufthansa Cargo, and Lufthansa CityLine. At Eurowings, only departures from German airports on Monday were affected.

The strike is the fourth wave of industrial action at Lufthansa this year and follows a cabin crew stoppage last week that also led to widespread cancellations.

The dispute centers on company pension provisions and pay, particularly at the regional unit CityLine. Lufthansa said the strike marked a new level of escalation, and it would not alter its strategy.
