ABUJA, April 11 (Xinhua) -- A local government official in Nigeria's southern state of Delta has been kidnapped by unknown gunmen, the police said on Saturday.
Bright Abeke, chairman of the Sapele Local Government Area, was kidnapped at a hotel in the Owumi axis on Friday evening, as the gunmen in three vehicles attacked the area, shooting indiscriminately to scare guests and passersby, Bright Edafe, the spokesman for the Delta police, told local media.
A local guard sustained a gunshot injury during the attack.
According to local media, about 15 gunmen carried out the attack, going straight for their target before forcefully taking him to an unknown destination.
Edafe said the police have launched a search and rescue mission to bring back the abducted local government official unhurt. ■
