NEW DELHI, April 10 (Xinhua) -- The Indian government on Friday said it is deeply concerned by reports of a large number of civilian casualties from recent Israeli strikes against Lebanon.

The statement came two days after Israel bombed 100-plus targets across the Middle Eastern country in 10 minutes on Wednesday, killing over 300 people and injuring over 1,100 others.

"As a troop contributing country to the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon for Lebanon's peace and security, the direction of events is very disturbing," India's foreign ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said during a press briefing.

"India has always emphasized the protection of civilians as the foremost priority. Observing international law and respecting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of states is essential," Jaiswal said.
