U.S., Iran announce 2-week ceasefire

U.S. President Donald Trump said Tuesday he has agreed to "suspend the bombing and attack of Iran for a period of two weeks."

Trump wrote on social media that his decision is subject to Iran agreeing to the complete, immediate and safe opening of the Strait of Hormuz.

He described the two-week suspension as "a double sided ceasefire."

Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi said in a statement that Iran would halt its attacks if attacks against it stop and that safe transit through the Strait of Hormuz would be possible for two weeks in coordination with Iranian armed forces.

Iranian state media reported that negotiations with the United States are scheduled on Friday in Islamabad, following its 10-point proposal to Washington via Pakistan.

One attacker was killed and four others, including two police officers and two attackers, were wounded Tuesday during a shootout near the Israeli consulate in Istanbul's Besiktas district, a local official said.

Istanbul Governor Davut Gul told reporters on the scene that the attackers targeted police officers who were taking security measures in the area. He said the police officers were slightly wounded during the shootout.

Meanwhile, Turkish Interior Mustafa Ciftci said on social media platform X that the attackers came to Istanbul from Izmit in a rented vehicle.

S. Korea's special counsel seeks 23-year sentence for ex-PM Han

South Korea's special counsel on Tuesday sought a 23-year prison sentence in the appeals court for former Prime Minister Han Duck-soo for aiding the insurrection of former President Yoon Suk-yeol.

The team of Cho Eun-suk, an independent counsel who led investigations into Yoon's insurrection and other charges, demanded the 23-year prison term in appeal after requesting a 15-year imprisonment in the first instance.

The Seoul Central District Court sentenced Han to 23 years in prison in January.
