AMMAN, April 4 (Xinhua) -- The Jordan Armed Forces said on Saturday that its air defense systems intercepted the vast majority of missiles and drones targeting the kingdom during five weeks of heightened military escalation in the region.
According to an official military briefing, a total of 281 Iranian missiles and drones were launched toward Jordanian territory, including 161 missiles and 120 drones. Of these, 261 were successfully intercepted and destroyed, while 20 were not intercepted.
Mustafa Hiyari, director of military media at the Jordan Armed Forces, said at a press briefing that intercepting the missiles and drones led to shrapnel falling in different areas of the country, stressing that the attacks represent a violation of Jordan's sovereignty.
The attacks followed airstrikes by the United States and Israel on Iran, which triggered retaliatory attacks affecting several countries in the region.
Jordan has activated defense cooperation agreements with allied countries to enhance airspace protection, while coordinating with civil aviation authorities to ensure the safety of air traffic, Hiyari added.
Meanwhile, Amer Sartawi, spokesperson for the Public Security Directorate, said at the press briefing that authorities handled 585 reports of falling missile debris and shrapnel across the country.
The incidents resulted in material damage to 59 homes and 31 vehicles, as well as 16 cases of damage to public property. A total of 28 injuries were recorded, most of them minor, with all individuals later discharged from hospital, Sartawi said. ■
