NEW DELHI, April 4 (Xinhua) -- Nine members of a family were killed after a car carrying them skidded off the road and fell into a well in the western Indian state of Maharashtra, police said Saturday.
The accident took place on Friday night at Shivaji Nagar area of Dindori town in Nashik district, about 305 km northeast of Mumbai, the capital city of Maharashtra.
According to the police, the victims were returning from a social gathering when their car reportedly went out of control and fell into a water-filled well.
Police have registered a case and ordered an investigation into the accident.
Deadly road accidents are common in India, often caused by overloading, the bad condition of roads and reckless driving.
Minister of Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari recently said India records nearly half a million road accidents and 180,000 related fatalities annually. ■
