S. Korea's imported car sales log double-digit growth in March

SEOUL, April 3 (Xinhua) -- South Korea's imported car sales logged a double-digit growth last month due to strong demand for electric vehicles and German luxury models, industry data showed Friday.

The number of imported vehicles sold here jumped 34.6 percent from a year earlier to 33,970 in March, according to the Korea Automobile Importers & Distributors Association.

For the first three months of 2026, 82,120 imported cars were sold, up 35.4 percent compared with the same period of last year.

U.S. carmaker Tesla ranked first in terms of automotive sales among foreign companies by selling 11,130 units last month.

German automaker BMW came next with the sale of 6,785 units, followed by German carmaker Mercedes-Benz with 5,419 units, BYD with 1,664 units, Volvo with 1,496 units, Audi with 1,300 units and Lexus with 1,178 units.

The number of European models sold here was 18,838 last month, taking up 55.5 percent of the total. U.S., Japanese and Chinese brands recorded market shares of 33.8 percent, 5.9 percent and 4.9 percent each.
