BAKU, April 1 (Xinhua) -- Portugal has decided to open an embassy in Baku to elevate its diplomatic representation in Azerbaijan, the Azerbaijani Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Wednesday.
The announcement came as Portuguese Foreign Minister Paulo Rangel and Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov held a phone conversation to discuss bilateral cooperation as well as regional and international security issues, according to the ministry.
Rangel informed his Azerbaijani counterpart of Lisbon's decision, and Bayramov welcomed the move.
The two sides emphasized the importance of the political consultation mechanism and mutual visits in advancing bilateral ties.
They also reviewed the existing opportunities for expanding bilateral cooperation in the fields of economy, energy, trade, transport and tourism. ■
