LOS ANGELES, March 31 (Xinhua) -- The average cost of a gallon of diesel in California, the largest U.S. state economy, on Tuesday reached an all-time high of 7.455 U.S. dollars as the U.S.-Israel war on Iran enters its second month.

The new high surpasses the previous record of 7.012 dollars per gallon set in June 2022 and follows last week's statewide average of 7.018 dollars per gallon, according to the American Automobile Association.

Meanwhile, the national average retail price for diesel stood at 5.454 dollars per gallon on Tuesday.

Data from the California Energy Commission show that diesel is the state's second-largest transportation fuel, representing 17 percent of total fuel sales behind gasoline.

The average price of regular gasoline in California has also risen sharply, reaching 5.887 dollars per gallon, up from 4.643 dollars just one month ago.

California consistently holds the highest fuel prices in the country due to higher taxes, stricter environmental regulations, and limited refinery capacity, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration.
