BEIJING, March 31 (Xinhua) -- Chinese stocks closed lower on Tuesday, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index down 0.8 percent to 3,891.86 points.
The Shenzhen Component Index closed 1.81 percent lower at 13,478.06 points.
The combined turnover of these two indices totaled 1.99 trillion yuan (about 288 billion U.S. dollars), up from 1.92 trillion yuan on the previous trading day.
Shares related to subway equipment, horse racing and automobile services led the gains, while coal mining and oil and gas extraction stocks saw sharp declines.
The ChiNext Index, tracking China's Nasdaq-style board of growth enterprises, lost 2.7 percent to close at 3,184.95 points.
The STAR Composite Index, which reflects the performance of stocks on China's sci-tech innovation board, closed 2.48 percent lower at 1,618.58 points. ■
