TEHRAN, March 30 (Xinhua) -- A petrochemical unit in the northwestern Iranian city of Tabriz was struck by a U.S.-Israeli airstrike early Monday, the official news agency IRNA reported.

The strike hit a unit at the Tabriz Petrochemical Company but did not cause any release of dangerous or toxic substances, IRNA quoted a statement from East Azerbaijan province's crisis management department as saying.

The statement added that the situation was under control and that rescuers and operational teams were dispatched to the site.

The U.S.-Israeli military campaign against Iran, which began on Feb. 28, has expanded beyond military targets to include energy and economic infrastructure. On March 7, several oil depots in Tehran and neighboring Alborz province were hit by missiles and set on fire.
