CAIRO, March 29 (Xinhua) -- Arab foreign ministers have approved a recommendation to support Egypt's nomination of its former Foreign Minister Nabil Fahmy for the post of Arab League (AL) secretary-general, the Egyptian Foreign Ministry said Sunday in a statement.
The decision came during the 165th regular session of the AL Council at the ministerial level, held via videoconference, to discuss regional developments.
The recommendation will be submitted to the upcoming AL summit in Saudi Arabia, read the statement.
When appointed, Fahmy will hold the post for five years starting July 1, succeeding veteran diplomat Ahmed Aboul-Gheit, who has been the AL chief since 2016.
Fahmy, who served as Egypt's foreign minister from 2013 to 2014, is considered one of the country's prominent diplomats, with extensive experience in diplomacy and international relations.
He previously served as Egypt's ambassador to Japan from 1997 to 1999 and to the United States from 1999 to 2008, and is known for his expertise in regional and international security as well as disarmament. ■
