BANGKOK, March 27 (Xinhua) -- A large majority of Thais viewed rising oil prices and a higher cost of living as their primary concerns stemming from the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, surveys showed on Friday.

According to a survey conducted by the King Prajadhipok's Institute, which gauged public expectations regarding the Middle East crisis, an overwhelming 78.9 percent of respondents were most worried about the direct financial impacts, specifically increased prices for fuel, transportation and food.

In a separate poll, sampling 2,000 citizens nationwide by the same institute, 52.5 percent of respondents urged the government to maintain a neutral stance, prioritizing national interests and the welfare of Thai people.

Furthermore, 16.3 percent suggested the state should focus heavily on economic countermeasures to absorb the financial shock, rather than making international diplomatic gestures.

Another 12.8 percent wanted the government to coordinate intelligence and security to prevent domestic risks.
