ACCRA, March 27 (Xinhua) -- The Ghanaian culture came alive on Thursday as groups from across the country converged at the Efua Sutherland Children's Park in Accra, the country's capital, to kick off activities marking the final week of the national Heritage Month.

Ghana observes March, the month it gained independence from British colonial rule, as Heritage Month, featuring a range of activities that showcase the country's rich cultural diversity.

Thursday's event, dubbed the Onua Durbar, blended traditional and contemporary music, arts and fashion, displaying Ghana's creative heritage.

Traditional dances from various regions lit up the durbar grounds, including Adowa and Kete from the Akan regions, Borborbor and Agbadza from the Volta Region, Kpanlogo from the capital, as well as Bamaya, Takai, Damba and Tora from the northern parts of the country.

Also on display at the park, located near the central business district, were a variety of authentic Ghanaian garments, including the handwoven smock known locally as fugu or batakari, kente cloth, batik, wax prints and other locally inspired fashion designs.

Traditional rulers from different regions and ethnic groups made a grand entrance in full royal regalia, adding to the spectacle with a magnificent display of tradition that celebrated the beauty, richness and originality of the African culture.
